Mne. John Wilkinson
PLY/X103684 Mne.John Wilkinson, known as 'Jack' or 'Ginger', was registered into the Royal Marines at Plymouth on 6 May 1941. After volunteering for Special Service he was attached to 'The Royal Marine Commando' on 22 February 1942. This was the first RM Commando unit which had been formed one week earlier, previous Commando units all being from the Army. It would later be redesignated as 40RM Commando. On 19 August 1942 he was wounded and taken prisoner of war during operations at Dieppe (Operation Jubilee) and later imprisoned in Stalag 344 at Lamsdorf, Poland. POW no. 25770.
