Sgts. Arthur Wardle and Roy Bellringer
This photo was taken in 1941.
Sgt.Arthur Wardle, on the left, was in 4 troop of No.2 Commando at this time. He was in the protection squad for the demolition team (one of whom was my father L/Sgt Joe Rogers) on ML443 at St Nazaire. On return he was sent to OCTU and later became an officer in No.3 Commando. There is a photo of him and others titled 'No.3 Commando Officers - Limehouse 1944' in the CVA No.3 Cdo Gallery.
L/Sgt. Roy Bellringer (aka TingaLing). on the right, was in 1 troop of No.2 Commando. He took part in the St Nazaire raid making it back to the UK. He was a boxer and there is a photo of him in the CVA gallery in the No.2 Cdo Boxing Team July 1942. His daughter Karen added on 24/7/11 "He used to run an Hotel with my Mother in North Wales, and I recall quite a few of his Commando friends staying at the Hotel when I was younger, though he never really spoke to me about the army. I suppose this is a way that many coped with the death and loss that was suffered during the war.I know that he trained the naval commandos and Americans in Scotland in unarmed combat etc but not a lot more really".
Photo from the private album of Major William Oranmore 'Bill' Copland DSO, of No.2 Cdo., courtesy of his son Peter Copland. Photo and all details posted by Pete R.
