Update 16/10/11 by Pete R. Des Rochford No.2 Cdo. provided some notes for this photo to Paul Bell. Des wrote " Lake Commachio April 1945. Self and Scouse Hale 2 Cdo. Heating up some meat and vegetable in a mess tin on a tommy cooker during a rest in the battle. My assault jacket with water bottle in one of the pockets is in front of me. I had no idea it was being taken by a roaming cameraman Swet who was the medical officers bodyguard" .
Note: Pte Zvi Swet was seriously injured shortly after this. He had previously served in 51 ME Commando. There are pictures of him in our gallery at post war reunions.
The reference here to a ‘Tommy Cooker’ is the small, tin folding cooker using Hexamine Blocks which were still in use in the 1980 when I finally hung up my Green Beret.
