Bill joined the LDV (Home Guard) aged just 14. From there he joined the Royal Scots, service number 14442599, and after being selected for officer training, he received his commission as 2/Lt on the 23rd November 1944 (LG Supplement 36912 page 621). He was then allocated a new service number as an officer - 335339.
Bill then volunteered for the Commandos and served in the Far East with No 1 Commando and 3 Commando Brigade.
Post war Bill was promoted Lieutenant on the 18th April 1949 now with the Army Air Corps, Territorial Army (LG Supplement 38665 page 3455).
Bill worked in the Procurator Fiscal's office Glasgow/Edinburgh, and served in 15 Para TA (Army Air Corps) for some 14 years, during which time he was promoted Captain on the 30th October 1957 (LG Supplement 41254 page 7347). It was during this period that his first wife Sheena died.
On the 1st August 1964 Bill retired from the Territorial Army, retaining his then rank of Major (LG Supplement 43440 page 8025), and took up Government office in Hong Kong. Bill was Senior Executive Officer in various Government Departments and a volunteer in the Hong Kong Auxiliary Marine Police.
In 1974 Bill married Morna Gibb in Hong Kong, and 5 years later in 1979 retired to Australia. He achieved many of his lifetime ambitions including building his own business and home, owning a horse, and earning his private pilots licence. In 1998 Bill became a Local Government Councillor.
Bill passed away on the 12th August 2015 and is sadly missed by his wife Morna, his children Lorna, Ross, Mark, Kathleen, and Jonathan, and his 10 Grandchildren, and 3 Great Grandchildren.
