A fascinating life that he never spoke to me about. I was only vaguely aware he was in the Commandos and later assumed that as a young boy that was wisheful thinking on my part as in the early post-war years the Commandos occupied a very special, exciting and glamnorous position in everyone's minds, especially young boys. I found out all the above a long time after his death which is a great pity to me.

Idris Jones recently examined this photo (of which he has an original copy) and thought that the unknown man might be called Lewis.

Lt Hemming led the raid on Luc St Mere, code named Operation Chopper, in Sep 1941. Two men were killed on this raid and are buried in a local Catholic church, when Lt Hemmings died in the early 1990's his ahes were, in accordance with his wishes, buried next to the graves of his two lost men, whom he never forgot.

I have been contacted by John Mewett, who thinks that he may be able to identify the man standing next to my father. He has stated that he has quite a strong resemblence to the man standing at the extreme left of his Cocanada 2 group photo, if this is the case then the man in my photo is called Simmonds. I must admit that the two men are quite similar to eachother.
