M Straughan MM citation
Although his name is not spelled exactly right, Sgt Straughan is mentioned in M Lindsay's (same Officer as on citation) excellent book about the Gordon Highlanders in NW Europe in WW2; called "So Few Got Through".
Please see other comments on this post re my Dad's recollections of 'Geordie' Straughan.

To the family of JMS,
I have known about your Father since I was a boy (now 55). My Dad, Allan Shepherd (now 85) knew him as 'Geordie' Straughan whilst serving in 1 Battalion Gordon Highlanders and has, over the years, spoken about him often and with great esteem.
My Dad joined the Gordons just after the war ended in 1945 as a regular soldier on his 18 birthday. Apparently had tried to get in earlier but didn't look old enough! His mate did and got in. My Dad is a Yorkshireman but was drawn to the Gordons when he joined up.
Once at battalion, my Dad used to pal up with your Dad. To my Dad, Geordie was an 'old soldier', probably in his early thirties then!
Dad has told me that Geordie had re-enlisted after the war ( having to come back as a private), having been a Sergeant before demob. As a result, he knew many of the NCO's who he had previously served with andhad their respect ( which the other rookies didn't !). Apparently, Geordie wouldn't answer roll call unless they said 'MM'...

My Dad knew of your Dads escape from St Valery and of his MM exploits.
Sadly, my Dads memory is failing ( when I told him of seeing Geordie details on this site) but he could remember that he used to be know the Army with him.

Update from Brian Wraith-Mottier "In the web-site photo gallery of N°6 Commando there is a panorama from July 1943. I have seen an original of this photo inside the farm house used by N°6 at Amfreville, France. Underneath the photo is a typed list of all the names of the Commandos in that photo. I presume that sometime in the past the photo was presented to the SAULNIER family by N°6 Commando veterans. My father is shown in that photo and his position on the list of names is correct ie second row extreme LH side "Pte Wraith"
I have no reason to doubt that other Commandos are correctly named. The photo was taken through the glass frame so there is alot of reflection included, but the names can be understood."

My father was in 44 Commando and we were just looking at photo's on website (he also has many of these. The ones marked Malaya were actually HK - New Territories/Chinese border crossing. Malaya 4 is a bailey bridge called Chick Bridge and guarded the border crossing. The original bridge was underneath it but had been blown up by Middlesex Regiment when they left HK in the retreat

Photo updated 1/08/10 by Pete R. The following information comes from Andy Dalziel (jnr) " My father, Andy Dalziel, you already have as well as my godfather, Paddy (Tommy) Ludlow. Third row down and six from the left, with the little moustache, is Des Crowden, Des was a Londoner who after the war worked for Paddy Ludlow in the TV and radio rental he set up, DER. My father died in 1974, Des in the early 1990s as I recall. The photo was taken in the gardens beside the Greenbank hotel where they mustered every morning. "
