Where ever these guys are they have their weapons close to hand with one (right hand) wearing a full bandolier of 100 rounds!

I put this given where this man lies buried. I used to have a pint with Marine Cliff Welsh RM (45 RM Commando) a Vickers Machine Gunner. He told me of motoring thru the Reichwald Forest in one of three Jeeps. His was rearmost. They ran into a German Panzer which immediately opened fire hitting the two leading Jeeps and killing or injuring the Marines in them. His driver headed for cover so they were not hit. I wonder if Marine Keough was in one of those Jeeps.

I asked Marine Cliff Welsh RM (45RM Cdo) about the Bikes and was told they were ditched almost immediately together with some other items which gave no advantage.

The Identity Discs shown serve a number of purposes. They show Name, Regimental Number, Religion with Blood Group on the reverse. If killed the red circular disc is removed and sent back to the Pay and Records, the other buried with the body. In the case of a Royal Marine his Personal Record is endorsed, “Discharged Dead” and closed. They should be knotted so that the red disc can be cut off with the other above the knot remaining secure. You will note that the RM Cap Badges bear the Kings Crown (King George Vl)

RM Commandos showing captured German items. The left hand man, rear rank, is holding a Panzerfaust hollow charge anti tank Infantry weapon.

These Royal Marines Commandos are showing captured souvenirs, the fact that both men on each side of the flag are wearing SS Daggers may mean they had been fighting this type of a German formation.

The man on the right is my father, H W Pratt (EX3417)
I have a copy of this photograph. I don't know who took it, but my dad, who was in F Troop, 45 Commando, told me that it was taken just after he had returned from a patrol, which was why he was wearing plimsolls so he could make less noise!

Hi Peter,
Agree as per the caption we think it is E Troop rather than F. We have an original photo (no date or anything else on the front) but from the album is
“E Troop 45 RMC 14-1-46 Linfold Camp Nr Horsham” They then embarked for the Far East on 31st January. My wife’s father was Cpl John Joseph O’Sullivan (though rank seemed to go down and up at times) - known to us as “Jack” but not sure what he was known as in the Marines. He joined the Marines in early 1943 (9th Battalion), then into 46 RMC when it was formed and served with them until injured on 2nd July 1944. Rejoined the unit when it was pulled back to England - and then went back to Europe in early 1945. We have recently obtained a copy of his service record, so can match dates for 46/45 RMC.
Hope this helps

Date query
Thank you Derek. It is actually 'E' troop the bottom line of the E being obscured. The photo came to us with the date thereon. Looking at the photo they are wearing ties. The introduction of collar and tie with battle dress for RM OR's did start at the end of 1944[RMRO 1673 and 1788,and RMRO 245 of 1945.] May is suggest you register and post a message with your query on our Forum and include the details of the RM Commando you identify.

45 RMC
How sure are you about the date. Wife’s father is 2nd row up just above the F leaning to the left. But he did not join 45 RMC until 46 RMC was disbanded in early 46.

Photo location.
I have identified the location of this photo. Hilsea barracks Portsmouth, where 45 trained after formation and were stationed temporarily when they came back from Normandy.
