The Eulogy for Major Peter Bolton MBE
The Seaforth Highlanders and No. 9 Commando.
This Obituary is from The Highlander - The Regimental newsletter of the Highlanders (Seaforth, Gordons and Camerons) "Major Peter Bolton died in Windsor on 1 August 2011 aged 88 years. He joined The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in April 1941 and was commissioned into the Seaforth Highlanders in October 1943 serving in the war with No 9 Commando in Yugoslavia, Greece and the final battles in Italy. He served in 5th Bn, The Parachute Regt in 1947 and in Palestine in 1948; Libya and Malta 1948-51; 1st Bn The Nigerian Regiment 1951-52; BAOR 1952-1955 including active service in Malaya on secondment to the Malaysian Forces during the emergency there. From 1955-59 he was the the All Arms Training Centre in Sennelager and the Aden intelligence Staff up to 1963; then from 1963-65 in The Malaysian Rangers in Malaysia and Borneo. He transferred to The Royal Signals in 1965 and served at RAF Laarbruch. His final posting was to Hong Kong where he retired from the Army, starting work the next day with the Hong Kong Police as Superintendent. After 13 years and being awarded the MBE he retired to Spain before becoming a Military Knight of Windsor on 15 March 1990. He held the MBE (Civil), 1939-45 Star, Italy Star Defenceand War Medals, General Service Medal(Clasps Palestine and Malaya), General Service Medal (Clasp Malay Peninsula) and The Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Medal. He also holds the Pingaat Khidmat Berbakti and Pingaat Kerana Perkhidmatan’Am (Malaysia). He has been awarded two medals that are not worn – the Greek War Medal and the Hong Kong Police Disbandment Medal. A distinguished record by any account and the last surviving World War II Veteran in the Military Knights. He was a first class friend to many and had a keen sense of humour. Peter was brought up in Orkney and was a notable linguist, he remained a Seaforth Highlander until transferring in 1965.
