Harold Hayes B.E.M
Harold Hayes, former Lance Sergeant in No.6 Commando, was awarded the British Empire Medal on the 31st December 1981 for his role as Chief Officer 1, H.M.Prison Leeds (source LG 48837, page 24). On his retirement from the Prison Service he was also the recipient of the Imperial Service Medal.
Harold Hayes was the Founder and Secretary of the Blackpool branch of the Commando Association. When he stood down from the role in 1996 they wrote in Commando Association newsletter 103 "The Secretary of our little branch, Harold Hayes BEM has resigned and is replaced by Jim Richardson. All concerned at Blackpool wish to thank Harold for all his hard efforts in forming our group and keeping us together until he was unable to carry on any longer."
His death was announced to members in Commando Association newsletter 109 "Our little band of comrades deeply regret the sad passing away of Harold Hayes (6 Cdo). Harold was a founder member of our group. There was a splendid turn out at his funeral with many service and other organisations being represented."
