In 1954 22 Special Air Service (SAS) Regiment required a replacement fighting squadron for deployment during the Malaya Emergency.The Parachute Regt was invited to provide personnel - around 80 officers and other ranks were selected from a large number of volunteers to form the Independent Parachute Squadron under the command of Major Edgar Walter Dudley Coventry (ex-No.5 Commando) then serving in 1 Para.
The newly formed Indep Para Sqn consisted of HQ Troop and four Sabre (fighting) Troops, of 14 soldiers, sub-divided into 3 Patrols.
