Roy Nicolle, No.5 Commando, 5 Troop, HQ Section Bren Gun.
Roy Nicolle is a Guernseyman and, according to ancient laws, Guernseymen were exempt conscription. Roy volunteered to join the British Army and, as a volunteer, was able to choose which regiment he could join. He chose The Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) despite having never been to Scotland...
Once enlisted and trained, Roy volunteered for The Commandos and, on completion of his Commando training was posted to No12 Cdo. When No12 was disbanded in 1943, Roy was transferred to No5 Commando.
In November 1943, Roy travelled with The Commando to India and, once there, was selected, along with Pte Leslie Alfred Brandon Peach, as the No5 Commando 5 Troop HQ Section Bren Gunners.
On the 23 March 1944, 5 Troop were ambushed by the Japanese and many commandos were lost with many more being wounded. Among those KIA was Pte Les Peach (No1 on the Bren Gun) and among those wounded was Roy Nicolle (No2 on the Bren).
Roy provided this photo which was taken on his first leave back in Guernsey after The Occupation, for his grandparents who had last seen Roy as a young lad, "barely out of short trousers..."
Roy is pictured proudly wearing the red hackle of The Black Watch in his Commando Beret.
