Pte. Frank Alfred Roper, No.5 Commando 2 Troop
14865741 Private Frank Roper served in 2 Troop, No. 5 Commando. Photo courtesy of his son Malcolm who adds the following :
"Dad and his parents initially lived in an apartment in Bedminster, but with the family growing, Dad moved into his Grandparent’s pub, the Coopers Arms in St Phillips Marsh, Bristol. Dad left school aged 14 and his Dad got him a job at the Bristol Aeroplane Company where the Beaufighter and the Blenheim bomber were built. In 1944 when Dad reached the age of 18 he was called up and found himself in the Somerset Light Infantry. From there he volunteered for the Commandos and after completing the tough training at Achnacarry, Dad’s first posting was to India and in Madras where he joined up with No. 5 Commando who were part 3 Commando Brigade. After the war ended Dad was demobbed and back home in Bristol where he married Pauline Josephine Roper (nee Blake) and was happily married for 67 years. Dad died on the 24th Nov 2018 aged 92."
