Lt. Noel Ewart Odell.
Noel E. Odell pictured here whilst on the 1924 expedition to climb Mt Everest. Odell, the Oxygen Officer on the fateful expedition, was the last person to see George Mallory and Andrew Irvine alive. Odell spent two weeks living above 23,000 feet (7,000m), and twice climbed to 26,800-ft and higher, all without supplemental oxygen.
Born in 1890 Odell was a geologist trained at the Royal School of Mines. He served in both World Wars. In WW1 he served in the Royal Engineers and was three times wounded, he qualified as A/RSM. During WW2 Odell was commissioned into the Royal Engineers, serving initially in the UK, later transferring to the Indian Army in the Bengal Sappers and Miners [Source: Extract from the Alpine Journal Obituary written by Peter Lloyd].
