L/Sgt. Eric Butler (later Flight Lieutenant)
Lance Sergeant Eric Butler took part in Operation Chariot, the raid at St Nazaire 28 March 1942. Embarking on ML307, he was wounded and evacuated back to the UK. He later left the Commando for officer training.
His son Paul adds the following: My Father was in Palestine with the North Staffs as a Private in 1940. After joining the Commandos he told me of the Raid to the Lofoten Islands (Operation Claymore - 1941); March 42 - St Nazaire (ML307); August 42 - Dieppe; November 43 - Commissioned; June 44 - Gliders on D-Day, not sure which landing site but he always mentioned Pegasus Bridge, with the Royal Worcestershire Regiment; Sept 44 - Operation Market Garden - taken prisoner and sat the duration out on Oflag 9A/H in Spangenberg Castle, Germany; May 45 - Released; later joined the RAF and retired as Flight Lieutenant in the RAF Regiment.
