Colonel Charles and the Padre
Colonel Charles Newman OC No.2 Commando and the No.2 Cdo. Padre. The photo is from the album of Major William Oranmore 'Bill' Copland of No.2 Cdo. The title placed on this photo which enlarges when clicked on and everything else about it from the Padre's smile, to the glasses of liquid refreshment beside each of them , makes it a great photo. Things were not to be so relaxed a month or so after this photo was taken when Colonel Charles Newman led the Commandos in the combined Commando and Naval attack on St Nazaire. For his courage in this epic raid he was awarded the Victoria Cross.

The photo tri-stud hob-nails are clearly visible on Colonel Newman’s boots and I have read the style dates back to the Romans!
