Lance Corporal John Stewart, No.2 Commando, kia 13/9/43 Salerno
Fatally wounded during operations at Dragone Hill, Salerno, Italy, and died on way to the Regimental Aid Post. Reported as buried by 41 RM Commando but his grave was never subsequently found. Son of John and Francis Stewart, of Clubmoor, Liverpool. Service
Former civilian trade - Meat Salesman. Enlisted 2nd Bn., Liverpool Scottish, Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders. April 1940 attached No.4 Independent Company on its formation at Sizewell. May 1940 Norway Expeditionary Force (Scissor Force). On return No.4 Independent Company was restructured as part of 1 Special Service Bn., before a new No.2 Commando was raised in February 1941. Attached 5 Troop of No.2 Commando. Billeted in private lodgings at Ayr 1942. No.1 of the Bren Gun of 5 Troop, 'B' Section, No.3 Sub-Section. 1943 embarked for Gibraltar for operations in Sicily and Italy.
