Charles Dettmer served in No.2 Commando HQ Troop
Gnr. Charles Dettmer No 2 Commando was injured in the same mortar explosion that killed Lieut. Arthur Brunswick of No.2 Cdo. This occurred on the 13th September 1943 at Dragone Hill, Salerno. In November 2009 Eric Buckmaster of 5 troop No.2 Cdo. recalled " Gnr. Charles Dettmer was in HQ Troop, Intelligence Section, and the fact that Tiny Burke attended Lt Brunswick means that they were operating in the vicinity of 5 Troop. Charles Dettmer, subsequently lost an arm to Mortar Fire in that action. Post War he was a newspaper reporter, and later he owned a Local Newspaper. Unfortunately he died rather suddenly only last year."
