10 (IA) Commando ashore - Operation Infatuate
This photo was originally shown as White Beach, Walcheren, 1st Nov 1944. However Jack Bakker has provided information to the contrary.
Update 22/10/11 by Pete R. - Jack Bakker provides the following information: "This photo was taken during Operation Infatuate. It states that the photo was made on White Beach which was near Westkapelle. Looking in a book called “Walcheren bevrijd” (Walcheren liberated) it says that the landing area near Westkapelle was dived in three parts. One directly on both sides of the gap which was bombed in the dyke. This was White Beach. North of this location was Red Beach (which had a sea wall) and in the south Green Beach which were dunes. On the left of photo you can see the sea wall with men leaning against it. So this must be Red Beach and not White beach. A large part of No 10 (Inter Allied) Commando landed on Red Beach. In the book there is nearly the exact photo as there is on the site. The caption with the photo in the book says: “Headquarters of No 10 (IA) Commando. With cigarette in hand is Lt Col Peter Laycock. To the left of him behind the radioman is the second in command, Major Godfrey R. Franks.”
