Private Thomas Malloch Buchanan
Photo courtesy of his nephew Alex Kean who adds "Pte Thomas Malloch Buchanan, service no. 14416348, was aged 17 and a member of the 2nd Argyll Home Guard from Dec 1941 - Nov. 1942. On 6th January 1943 he enlisted in the T/A and on his enlistment papers is a request to serve in a Highland Regiment. The Regiment he enlisted with was the 8th Bn. Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. After volunteering for and successfully completing the training course at the Commando Depot, Achnacarry, commencing 31st May 1943, he was attached to No. 1 Commando on the 28th July 1943. He served with them until wounded on the 31/1/45 during the battle for Hill 170. His service record then has a gap of 17 months until he turns up in Durban, South Africa, en route to a t/b sanitarium British Military Hospital 130 at Baragwanath near Johannesburg. He is eventually repatriated to the UK on the 10/6/47. A native of Inveraray, he died in Hairmyers Military Hospital, Lanarkshire on the 10th June 1948 to late to be considered a casualty of war"

Efforts to trace the grave of Pte. Buchanan are ongoing. Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders Museum have no record.
