Posted to 42 Commando December 1955
Posted to HMS Newfoundland (cruiser) 26th July 1956. Saw operational action in the Suez crisis and duties were gun layer on the 6inch and trainer on the 4inch guns. During this time the ship was in action against an Egyptian destroyer which fired upon them causing damage and casualties and was eventually sunk by the Newfoundland.
Subsequent postings and service with 45, 41, HQ 3 Cdo Bde and 40 commando included the near and Far East and two tours of Northern Ireland.
1970 (Sergeant)(HQ Commando Forces RM) awarded the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal (Globe and Laurel Oct'70)
Fred completed his 22years service and retired a Colour Sergeant in May 1977.
