Main gate at the Infantry Training Centre, Royal Marines, circa 1950s
Photo courtesy of Thomas 'Bing' Crosbie who adds the following information " The two photos of the main gate at Lympstone that I sent - the more up to date picture should have the caption “Commando Training Centre. This older picture was probably from the 1950’s when it was “The Infantry Training Centre”. In those days we had the choice when we finished the infantry training, of going either on the Commando course, or on a Gunnery Course and going to sea on “Big Ships”… There are still quite a few Royal Marines who served all their 23 years on board ships and never did the commando course. They are quite proud of their blue beret with the red patch. (now-a-days worn only by recruits or “Nods” as they are called) I went on the Commando course and served a commission in 40 Cdo. Then blow me down, I also went and did a gunnery course and served on board HMS Ceylon for another commission. I also fitted in six years as SBS but after getting an ear infection, I was stopped from any underwater activity and so had to leave SBS. I then served on various Admiral’s staffs as a printer."
All Otther Ranks accommodation was to the LEFT of the Main’Drag’, the two Galleys, JNCOs Club, and the ‘Blue Pig’ Marines Bar (Devon Scrumpy 6d or 2p) also on the left just past Sylvan Glade with the Camp Cinema and Gymnasium on the right at the bottom....

There was no Camp Railway Station, we used Exton and yomped up to Dutchys for Goodnight scran!

This is a good picture showing the Main Gate, the main ‘drag’ running down towards the beautiful Exe Estuary. This is how all older Royal Marines will remember it. The Guard Room is to the right of the Gate with the small Gate Sentry Post visible just...

The Guard Room is to the right of the Gate with the small Gate Sentry Post visible just inside the Gate. The second building down on the left had a small shelter where there were slot machine for nutty and gophers (chocolate and drinks), the big trees half way down is a Sylvan Glade where the old Tarzan Course was sited. The Camp is shown much as it was originally built and can be dated as the Squad is armed with the 7.62mm Self Loading Rifle first issued to 728(CS) Squad RM in 1959. All OR accommodation was to the left of the picture and the build had commenced on the ‘new’ Officers’ Mess to the right and behind the Guard Room. Dutchys’ Hot-Dog and gophers caravan would be parked during the evening to the right of the Gates and outside the Camp. HappyDays.
