George Hanna Wellman was born on the 27th May 1929 in Drummore. He joined the Royal Marines aged 19 on the 8th March 1949, service no. RM8895, and after his initial training attended the Commando School RM from 13th Dec. 1949 to the 10th July 1950. He was posted to 41 Independent Commando RM on the 10th August 1950 and remained with them during the Korean War until 11th December 1951. On return to the UK he had various postings at RM Barracks and also HMS Howe which was at the time headquarters of the Devonport Division, Reserve Fleet. On the 6th Feb. 1953 he was posted to the Commando School RM remaining there until 5th May 1954. The following month on the 2nd June 1954 he was posted to 45 Commando RM (3 Cdo Bde) serving with them until until the 23rd Nov. 1955. The following year he enrolled into the Royal Fleet Reserve and remained there from the 8th March 1956 to the 7th March 1961 to complete his service. George passed away in 1986 aged 56.
