In Memory of RM 21817 Marine Richard Hydes
45 Commando Royal Marines
who died in Aden on 18 May 1964 aged 18 yrs.
Remembered with honour Maalla Cemetery, Aden."
Marine Hydes, from Bracebridge Lincoln, died in a live firing training accident outside Dhala camp, Aden, while preparing for the initial Radfan operation. A newly introduced GPMG went off accidentally whilst the gunner was moving position and hit his number two, Marine Hydes, who was ahead of the gunner locating a new fire position.
Bob Howden adds "Dickie Hydes started training with 788 Squad at the Depot RM in November 1962. The photo was cropped from the first Squad photo when formation was complete and training about to commence. Dickie joined with a number of lads from Lincolnshire and is still well remembered by them. He finished his training with a later squad before draft to 45 Cdo RM."
