Corporal John Thompson CGC
Cpl Thompson, 29, from Plymouth, received the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross, second only to the Victoria Cross. Since the introduction of the CGC in 1993 only twenty-four such awards have been made. Corporal Thompson's citation refers to his display of exceptional bravery and leadership, particularly under fire. He was always at the forefront of over 30 fierce fire-fights with the Taliban. On numerous occasions his vehicle was hit by small arms fire and shrapnel, including rocket-propelled grenades, and he displayed gallantry, determination, outstanding professionalism and exceptional junior leadership and skills far beyond that expected.
