L/Bdr Smith and Cfn Farrelly on the waterproofing trials for the 1 tonne Rover c.1975

The following 7 photographs are part of the waterproofing trials for the 1 tonne Rover carried out at Instow North Devon by what was then Fording trials branch REME, now it is a Royal Marine Unit. The trial was carried out by the members of the trials branch observing two members of 29 Commando carrying out the waterproofing over 3 days and then driving the vehicle to the required depth, the White line on the vehicle door indicates this. And then as far as was possible without drowning the vehicle. This we did and came ashore successfully.

In Photo 8 the only thing we did to protect the snorkel from taking in sea water was to put a hand in front of it.

The driver is Cfn Farrelly REME and the commander is L/Bdr Smith both of 8 Alma Commando Light BTY RA
