Sgt. Iain Bruce Johnstone
29 Commando RA. Photo courtesy of his wife Violet who adds "Iain did his commando training at Lympstone in 1974 whilst attached to 29 Cdo where he held the rank of Sgt. He then moved to RM Condor, Arbroath (45 Cdo) where he was attached to either 7 or 8 battery. He left full time Army service in 1976 and then joined the TA in Arbroath as a full time vehicle mechanic, before transferring to the post of NRPS. I can't be sure of the exact dates because we moved to Zambia from 1979-82 but I do know he was still in the TA in 1983 with the rank of Sgt. After leaving the TA he worked with the Army Cadet force in Arbroath where he held the rank of Lieutenant. He was heavily involved with the Tayside Branch of the Royal Artillery and carried out the duties of both Secretary and Treasurer.
Iain was an Army man through and through having enlisted in Hadrians Boys School after leaving school in 1964. He enlisted into REME and served as a vehicle and electrical mechanic in Singapore and Germany before returning to Plymouth in 1974.
Iain died on 4th February 2017 aged 67. He wore his green beret with great pride and his ashes were scattered at the Commando Memorial at Spean Bridge."
Violet adds "I was very proud to have been his wife for 43 years."
