The then Pte. Edward 'Tiny' Burke gives an account of his death in a book by Dennis Reeves of The Liverpool Scottish Museum Trust : "At 0445hrs a loaded rifle with safety catch off, fell and discharged a round in the confined space where he was berthed on board HMS Vindictive when returning from Operation Scissorforce. He was batman to Lieut. Lawrence Taylor and was buried at sea. Pte McGuire was wounded."
Only an hour before they had just completed a ship to ship transfer at sea from HMS Havelock.
