June 1943 Michael Edward Hincks enlisted as a Marine at the Bristol R.M. Recruiting Centre s/n PLY/X 112723. Aug'43 posted R.M. Barracks, Portsmouth, for basic training. Later selected for a pre-OCTU course at Deal. Sept'43 joined Course H.O.23, R.M. OCTU, Thurlestone, Devon. 9th Feb'44 commissioned 2/Lt. R.M. & posted Dalditch Camp, Woodbury Common and later Gibraltar Camp at Llanegryn, near Tywyn, Wales. Successfully completed training at the CBTC, Achnacarry. Promoted Lieutenant R.M. Posted to Army Small Arms School, Netheravon, for instruction on the Vickers Medium Machine Gun and the 3-inch Mortar. Then posted to HOC at Wrexham. Oct'44 posted 46RM Commando on the Isle of Wight as replacement ā€œSā€ troop subaltern. In 1945 campaigned throughout Europe, from Antwerp through Holland and Germany to the Baltic until 5th May'45.

Lt Hincks biography continued: 46RM Commando remained in Germany, carrying out occupational duties at Neustadt, the Isle of Fehmarn (north-east of Kiel) and at Bad Schwartau (on the outskirts of Luebeck). This village, well known for its production of jam, was within his control area and also contained excellent stables, which housed thoroughbred and Arab horses. These were all Polish stallions which the German Army had captured, together with their Polish Army officers and men, after invading Poland in 1939. In June 1945 these stables were known as The Polish Government Stud, Clevehof, Luebeck, subsequently renamed No.1 Polish Remount Depot. The Polish officer in charge was Lieutenant Andrzej Osuchowski. On 8th Jun'45, 1 Commando Brigade (including 46 Commando R.M.) returned to England via Hamburg for further service in the Far East. The unit moved into civilian billets in Tunbridge Wells. 7th Feb'46 Lt Hincks was released from service as a Class B Release. Re-entered Bristol University (Faculty of Medicine). Qualified M.B., Ch.B., and registered with the General Medical Council 25th Jan'51 . House Physician, Bristol Royal Infirmary. Applied for the Permanent R.N.V.R., as Medical Officer. 2nd May'51 appointed Surgeon Lieutenant R.N.V.R. 1952 House Surgeon (Obstetrics & Gynaecology) Bristol Maternity Hospital and St Monica's. Appointed as Medical Liaison Officer to Bristol R.M.F.V.R. on 5th Dec'57. Promoted Surgeon Lieutenant Commander R.N.R. on 18th Jan'60 with seniority of 2nd May'59. Awarded the Volunteer Reserve Decoration on 11th Aug'64. Retired 10th May'74 in the rank of Surgeon Commander V.R.D. R.N.R. From 1953 to 1987 ā€“ General Practitioner in Cheddar
