Lieutenant Colonel Raymond Humphrey Quill was the Commanding Officer of 30 Assault Unit from November 1944. A veteran of World War One he had served with the RM Brigade at the Dardanelles 1914/1915 and on board HMS Lord Nelson from October 1916 to November 1918. He was Intelligence Officer, Naval Intelligence Division (N.I.D.), in Singapore at the outbreak of WW2 and later served in Iceland and the Mediterranean with N.I.D. In June 1944 he was appointed Commanding Officer of the Holding Bn., Portsmouth Divn. until joining 30AU a few months later [1].
