Update from Pete R. 8/6/2010 : A little bit about this soldier who still attends Veterans events and in fact remarried only last year. In WW2 he volunteered for the Commandos whilst serving as a young officer with the Royal Ulster Rifles, and was attached to No.12 Cdo. He took part in raids on Norway and St Nazaire. He went to St Nazaire on board HMS Campbeltown as a Lieutenant in No.12 Commando in charge of a demolition team. He was wounded and captured, however, he escaped from Spangenburg PoW camp, where he was imprisoned. He was on the run for ten days before being recaptured and transferred to Colditz Castle. He was awarded the Military Cross. He retired as General Officer Commanding Near East Land Forces in 1976 and became deputy commissioner of the Royal Hong Kong Police Force between 1978 and 1981.

That is a serious “Chest full of Medals” by any standard., It is interesting that that General Purdon chooses to wear his original Regimental Cap
Badge rather than his entitled Generals’ gold braid badge.
