Marine Leonard George 'Lenny' Rider
Photo courtesy of Michael Burroughs whose grandfather was Leonard's brother. Michael's mother Jean Rider was Leonard's niece. Taken at Gidea Park,Romford,Essex. Mike adds " My grandfather's brother Leonard Rider 'Lenny' was killed crossing the Rhine near Wessel, with his French guide (nb. see comments from admin below). They are buried together in the Reichswald . My grandfather found out many years later that Lenny was buried in grave [row] 62, the same house door number as my grandfather Albert Rider lived most his life. For my Grandad to lose his elder brother was very hard, both men over 6 feet tall and dockers from Barking, East London. Lenny first joined the Royal Navy and then transferred into 46RM Commando. My grandad never talked about the war much, but remembered Lenny coming home with a bren gun to show him, and then let a few rounds off over the local playing fields .."
