Notes
A copy of this photo was sent in by the family of Leslie Fosbery of No.4 Commando. He identified it as No.3 Commando. **It should be noted that in June 1945 whilst No.4 Cdo were at Recklinghausen in Germany, Major Jimmy Dunning (No.4 Cdo. and Instructor CBTC) states in his book "The Fighting Fourth": "At the end of June, 233 other ranks were posted to Nos. 3 and 6 Commandos back in England, who were earmarked for the war in the Far East, which had yet to be concluded".**

So there is a mix of men from both.
Donald Gilchrist is the officer wearing the tartan trews. The photo originally showed 'G' troop. Photo courtesy of Ray Brooks, son of Sgt Ernie Brooks 4 Cdo.

Update 29/8/11 from Pete R. "I spoke with Major Jimmy Dunning today regarding this photo. He advises me that this would have been in late 1942 or 1943 as Donald Gilchrist is in there. By this time the Commando had already changed from 10 troops to 6 troops 'A' - 'F' "

Update 31/8/11 from Pete R. Jimmy Dunning identifies Hutchison Burt as the officer on Donald Gilchrist's left. He was later promoted Captain and awarded the Military Cross. On Gilchrist's right is Sgt. Major Heaynes He was a boxer and fought for No.4 Cdo. in the lightweight category (scorecard from one match is on our site), alongside him is Sgt. Woodward

Update from Stephane: "After Lieut. Burt are Sgt Mercer, Sgt Harris, Cpl Dodds, L/Cpl Redman, L/Cpl Jackson, L/Cpl Fletcher" and "also included are Alan Coote, John Skerry, Harvey O'Hara"
In album Numerous troop photos of No.4 Commando

Photo and information courtesy of Stuart Palmer. However information from Stephane detailed below and in the comments suggest it is F troop of No.4 Commando. Stephane advises that it was taken in Falmouth. This would then make the date around April/May 1943 when No.4 Cdo were based there. I have now also identified Lt. Murdoch McDougall of F troop No.4 Cdo. from his picture in his own book Swiftly they Struck. The photo has therefore been relocated into the No.4 Cdo troop photos album. Ernest 'Dick' Palmer, grandfather of Stuart who provided this photo, is seated extreme left in the row above the men sitting cross legged. There are other photos of Ernest in the SBS album located within the WW2 photo gallery.
(posted by Pete R.)

Update 27/7/10 from Pete R. Stephane Saint-Martin has advised that he was given a copy of this photo by Roland Oliver of F Troop 4 Cdo. who is pictured along with other No.4 Cdo's from F troop. He states it is F troop of No.4 Cdo and was taken in Falmouth

Update 31/7/10 by Pete R. Lt. 'Big Mac' Murdoch McDougall of No.4 Cdo. F troop is seated 9th from the left. Photo moved to No.4 Cdo album
