Idris Jones recently examined this photo (of which he has an original copy) and thought that the unknown man might be called Lewis.

Lt Hemming led the raid on Luc St Mere, code named Operation Chopper, in Sep 1941. Two men were killed on this raid and are buried in a local Catholic church, when Lt Hemmings died in the early 1990's his ahes were, in accordance with his wishes, buried next to the graves of his two lost men, whom he never forgot.

RN Commandos.
22 Commandos were formed throughout WWII. The RN Cdos were designated Alphabetically, not Numerically like the Army Commandos and the Royal Marine Commandos, beginning with A Commando through to W Commando. (W CDO being all Canadian).

Extract from Army Commandos 1940 - 45 by Mike Chappel
"In Sep 1942 the Middle East Commando took part in their last operation - a raid on Torbruk. Whilst the Royal Marines (Force A) landed from sea, Commando Force B travelled across the dessert to their target in the vehicles of the Long Range Desert Group - a voyage of 2,000 miles. The raid went disasterously wrong. The Royal Navy lost a number of ships, including a cruiser, and only 90 Royal Marines returned. Force B were trapped within enemy lines and destroyed, only three men returning. The photograph above is of Commando officers of Force B on the outward journey, three of whom were still wearing the Balmoral bonnets and black hackles of No.11 (Scottish) Commando."

I have been contacted by John Mewett, who thinks that he may be able to identify the man standing next to my father. He has stated that he has quite a strong resemblence to the man standing at the extreme left of his Cocanada 2 group photo, if this is the case then the man in my photo is called Simmonds. I must admit that the two men are quite similar to eachother.

Hi, My father was Captain J.C. Lessing (Chris) seated above Jones with the mascot. Is there anyone who knew him ? He was a South African seconded to the R.M. Commandos in 1944.
I would love to hear from anyone who knew him.
