Comment from Jeremy Monk
Anecdotal evidence points to John also being at Dieppe. According to his daughter, he and Platt remained in contact after the war. According to the family "John rescued him from Dieppe beach and put him in a boat". Furthermore, after the war, John visited Dieppe and commented that he had been there during the war.

I think this photo was taken possibly in Lymestone in Devon, rather than Eastney in Portsmouth.

2nd row, 3rd from right
I can't be sure, but this chap has the likeness of my Grandfather - Harold Wilkinson.
He was originally from the 7th Manchesters and I have photos of him wearing the uniform of the 52nd Lowland (confirmed history with them).
The history we have suggests Commando involvement (either working alongside or within at Achnacarry, Walcheren/Flushing) but I have yet to prove this.

My grandfather
The gentleman 4th from the left in the back row is my grandfather John G May.
There is some confusion about what name he would have used as my mothers side of the family tended to use random names/nicknames. Officially he was John Graham De Wynne Montagu May.

43 Commando RM
To the best of my knowledge, 43 Commando didn't serve in the Far East at that time. 40 and 42 Commandos (42 at RNAS Sembawang and 40 at Burma Camp in Malaya) did alternate 5 month tours in Borneo. Additionally, almost all the buildings at RNAS Sembawang (commissioned as HMS Simbang) were of concrete construction, not wood. Finally, the rig (uniform) doesn't look right. My attempts to discover what 43 Commando were doing in the period 1964/5 have borne little of substance. However, The Imperial War Museum site has a piece regarding another Royal Marine: (his name I choose not to disclose) ..... who served as a signaller with 42 Commando RM in Borneo, served with 43 Commando RM in GB 1964 - 1965, served with Naval Beach Unit in Bahrain 1965 - 1966. So where in the UK was it?

Regiment query/cap badge
Service number indicates Royal Artillery and the RA Attestation record shows 7 May 1941 (Coastal Defence RA.);29 October 1946 (Field RA). CA newsletter 14 of 1952 mentions a Gunner H. Barber (3 Cdo). Gunner is an RA rank. No mention of RASC. There was a Fusilier H. Barker, RASC and No 3 Commando. His original Regiment was the Lancashire Fusiliers.
