When No.11 Commando was disbanded, Corporal Johnstone was sent to Military Mission 204 in the Far East where he joined Special Service Detachment II (SSDII). He died from exhaustion and Malaria near the Chinese border. It was here that Fred Goode, SSD II, who had become separated from his colleagues, happened upon the grave of Corporal Johnston which had a rough cross on which hung his slouch hat.
