Joe, a volunteer from the 34th Infantry Division US Army, served with No.6 Commando, as a medic.
Joe landed in North Africa with No. 6 and was wounded twice including when the flatbed train carrying No. 6 was attacked by German planes in late November of 1942.
joe sent this photo to his wife, Margaret "Jane" Ryan Miles on the birth of their daughter (Todd's mother) 24 May 1942, while he was still in Northern Ireland with the 168th Infantry, 34th Division. It reads "Love to Janie- Yours Daddy." Joe would not meet his daughter until November 1944 when he returned to the USA and was assigned to the Ranger Training Cadre at Ft. McClellan, Alabama as an instructor.
