This picture shows the "Domäne Stolzenau" at the east bank of the river Weser, Germany. This was a fairly large farm complex just across the river. Commando troops crossed the river here 6 April 1945 to support 8th battalion Rifle Brigade troops who were pinned down at this small bridgehead.

I think that this group is from the RM Commando, latterly 40 RM Commando. There is a similar photograph in Jeff Beadle's book, the Light Blue Lanyard which shows the group dressed the same and the Platoon Commander with a walking cane of some sort. The Commando called for trained volunteers from across the Royal Marines and that included 102 RM Brigade which had an Argyll battalion to bring the brigade up to strength. As the Argylls were serving with the Marines they were considered eligible to volunteer for commando training. The rig in the RM Commando in the early days at the Depot Deal was as you see in the photograph - cap comforter, toggle rope and leather jerkin over battle dress.
