Educated at Chester Road School, New Ferry, Wirral. Enlisted 4 February 1926 aged 18. Served as a Trooper in the Royal Tank Corps and later 'C' Company 2nd Bn. The Liverpool Scottish, Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders T.A. Volunteered for Special Service and joined No.4 Independent Company at Sizewell on its formation 22 April 1940. Proceeded for service in Norway with 'Scissors Force' which was part of North-West Expeditionary Force under the command of A/Lt-Col. Colin McVey Gubbins. Evacuated to UK on board HMS Vindictive. Disembarked Stromness 1 June 1940. Returned to unit. Posted Seaforth Highlanders 19 February 1942. Active service included Norway, North Africa, Sicily, and Italy.

Royal Tank Corps Register also mentions Royal Engineers but with no details. His brother James Mason also served in No.4 Independent Company.
