<br />
George Harry Birtles enlisted on the 10th March 1942 and was posted to Depot RM Lympstone, service no. PO/X111896. On the 28th April 1942 Mne. Birtles was posted to the 5th RM Battalion. He attended a Snipers Course between the 15th and 27th March 1943. The 5th RM Battalion was disbanded to form the new 45RM Commando on the 1st August 1943. Mne. Birtles served with 45RM Commando until the end of hostilities. Active service included Normandy, France, and the advance to Germany. Service included in 'B' Troop. Final date of discharge from RM service 8 June 1946.<br />
