Pte. Alexander 'Alistair' Cameron
2984506 Pte Alexander Cameron enlisted with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He volunteered for and was attached to 5 troop No. 9 Commando. He was known as Alistair to his family and friends.[view photo….][view archive entry….].
03/03/44 wounded Anzio ref. Casualty List WO417/74.
Evacuated to the UK and admitted to hospital in Liverpool.
23/6/44 admitted to hospital in Liverpool.
09/8/44 transferred to ‘Y’ List due to his wounds.
05/9/44 medically discharged from military service.
Alistair died in the late 1980's and is buried at Dalamally.
His son Allan Cameron adds "My father was wounded and captured after action in Wadi of Anzio Italy, and treated by a German orderly in a field hospital in a cave. Both he and another from 5 troop were posted missing presumed dead. They were eventually rescued by units of the Irish Guards and hospitalised in Alexandria. This information was relayed to me by Tommy Bostock, his Corporal, who was also wounded in same action and later received the MM."
