<br />
Thomas Vardy was born on 9th November 1921. He joined the Royal Marines on the 22nd May 1941 being attached to the Royal Marines Reserve Depot until 8th July 1941. From 9th July 1941 to the 2nd November 1941 he was posted Plymouth Division. On the 3rd November 1941 he was posted to the 9th RM Battalion, and from there on the 1st August 1943 he joined 46RM Commando. He served with 46RM Commando until he was killed in action in Germany on the 11th April 1945.<br />
<br />
Marine Vardy was awarded the Military Medal for Gallantry and this was presented to him on the 16th July 1944 at Amfreville by Field Marshall Montgomery.<br />
  <br />
Citation for his Military Medal: <i>This Marine was signal operator attached to Y Troop during the attack on Le Hamel and Rots on 11th June. He was carrying a 38 set. despite this load he pushed himself to the front and took a leading part in three assaults on enemy positions. His dash and determination when under heavy fire had an inspiring effect on the men of the troop.(L.G.29.8.44)</i><br />
