Fred was one of the Liverpool Scottish QOCH volunteers for the Independent Companies. He was in No.4 Ind. Coy and sailed with them to Norway (Operation Scissorforce). When the Commandos were formed Fred was attached to 5 troop of No.2 Commando. On 28th March 1942 Fred took part in the Combined Naval and Commando raid on St Nazaire. Fred was on board HMS Campbeltown as part of the protection squad for the pumping-house demolition team as it rammed the dock gates. The raid was a complete success but at a great cost with many killed or, as in Fred's case, taken prisoner of war. He was released in March 1945. Fred died aged 49 in 1964.
