Alfred William King took part in the raid on St Nazaire. He was a Lance Sergeant in No.1 Commando at the time. He was part of Lt Stuart Chant’s demolition team and their role was to destroy the pump house. He sailed on board the Campbeltown disembarking after she rammed the dock gates. He was taken POW and he later spent time in Stalag 383 in Bavaria in Germany. He later managed to escape whilst the Germans relocated prisoners during the American advance into Germany.
