This photo was taken not long after the first RM Commando was formed in 1942, initally known as 'The RM Commando', then briefly as 'A' RM Commando (when a second RM Commando was raised) finally being redesignated 40RM Commando. They had been based at Shanklin on the Isle of Wight.
'Laurie Southall remembered there had been a jokey remark passed between the lads and the young girls they have just walked past - hence the glance over the shoulder from one of the young ladies!
