Commissioned into 4th Battalion, The Borders Regt, Charles Jordan Bellingham Pollitt volunteered for the Commandos and was posted to No.1 Cdo. A popular officer he became 2 i/c No.1 Cdo until his posting to No.5 Commando to succeed Lt Col D. Shaw.<br />

Major General Robert Grice Sturges, a veteran of WW1, commanded the Special Service Group from August 1943.<br />
5 July 1940 (Colonel) (Royal Marines) Mentioned in Despatches in recognition of his service as Commander of 'Force Sturges' to establish a base on Iceland.<br />
19 May 1942 (Acting Major General) (Royal Marines) appointed Royal Marine Aide-de-Camp to The King.<br />
December 1942 Joint Commander of  British Forces in Madagascar (121 Force)<br />
7 January 1943 (Colonel Commandant)(Temporary Brigadier) awarded the Distinguished Service Order in recognition of gallant and distinguished services during operations in Madagascar.<br />
19 August 1943 Commander of the Special Service Group.<br />
14 June 1945 (Major General) (Commando Group) appointed K.B.E. (Military Division).<br />
<br />
In September 1943 the single Special Service  Brigade was replaced by the Special Service Group under the command of Major General Sturges, Royal Marines. This Group was formed of four new Special Service Brigades.<br />

During the summer of 1940 the Independent Companies were grouped into Special Service Battalions and a few months later these battalions became Commandos and were grouped into a Special Service Brigade under the command of Brigadier J. C. Haydon. He was succeeded in March 1942 by Brigadier R. E. Laycock. In October 1943 Laycock became Chief of Combined Operations in succession to Lord Louis Mountbatten.<br />

Served with the Irish Guards on the Western Front, 1917 - 1918, and in the interwar period; as Military Assistant to the Secretary of State for War, 1938 - 1939; as Commanding Officer, 2nd Battalion Irish Guards, 1939 - 1940, during which time he was involved with the operations at the Hook of Holland and Boulogne in May 1940; as commander of the Special Service Brigade (Commandos), 1940 - 1942, including the Commando raids on the Norwegian Lofoten and Vaagso Islands in 1941; as Vice Chief Combined Operations, 1942 - 1943; as commander of 1st Guards Brigade in Italy, 1944; as Army Director of Plans with the Combined Chiefs of Staff in Washington DC, 1944 - 1945; with the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Australia, 1946 - 1947; and as Chief of the Intelligence Division, Control Commission for Germany, 1948 - 1950<br/>In album <a href="https://gallery.commandoveterans.org/cdoGallery/v/The+Commanders/"><font color="#023207">The Commanders during WW2</font></a>]]></description>

Update from Chris Marchant Lane <i>&quot;The officer standing to the right of Derek Mills-Roberts is Major General Robert Grice Sturges CB, DSO. later Lt Gen Sir (KBE). He commanded the Special Service Group from August 1943 until June 1945. He was born in 1891 and died in 1970.</i><br />
