Andy adds " He was taken prisoner on Crete and spent the rest of the war in Stalag 3-D near Berlin. On a march west whilst still a POW, he was killed on 30th April 1945 when they were fired on by a Russian tank at Waganitz. I have investigated this and visited the village and found his grave in the Berlin cemetery. Incredibly, I found an account of all this in a book ‘People At War’ and found the author who was with him. This lead me to meet many of his fellow prisoners who had a annual get-together (sadly, this was some years ago and none now survive). Though I never met him, every year I put a remembrance cross on the cenotaph for him. An interesting point is he was named after the Q ship ‘King Stephen’ that his father served on during WW1. It was sunk and his father became a German POW in that war."
