His nephew Jonathan adds &quot;My uncle was seriously wounded by a mortar shell. His leg was saved by a Canadian surgeon but his injuries were severe and resulted in his inability to have children, along with very poor eyesight, and a loss of his senses of taste and smell&quot;.<br />
