From London Gazettes: War Office, 27th January, 1944.'The KING has been graciously pleased to approve the following awards in recognition of gallant and distinguished services in Italy: Military Cross -<br />
Lieutenant (temporary Captain) Brian Dear Butler (85295), The East Surrey Regiment (attd. Special Service Troops) (Billingshurst, Sussex).<br />

11th June 1944 Place: Chateau d'Amfreville<br />
&quot;2133 - Severe mortaring of HQ. Captain B.D. Butler MC and five others killed. Lt T.N. Skelly and three others wounded.&quot;<br />
