Captain John Balchin was attached to the Commandos from the Royal Armoured Corps. Having completed his time at the Commando Basic Training Centre (click on link to view image) as an instructor, he was posted with No 5 Commando to the Far East and served with them in Burma and Hong Kong. After the war he completed his articles to become a Chartered Accountant, and in 1948 he migrated to South Africa where he spent the rest of his days.
