Captain Richard Broome, Officer Commanding 5 troop, was killed in action at Dragone Hill as the enemy attacked down the valley of La Molina towards Vietri, Italy. Initially buried on the forward slope of Dragone Hill. Son of Geoffrey and Ethel Broome; husband of Desiree L. M. Broome, of Rake, Hampshire; father of Angela.

In 1940 Lieutenant Richard Broome volunteered from the South Lancashire Regiment for the Independent Companies when they were first raised. He was attached to No 4 Independent Company and saw action during an operation in Norway (Scissors Force). Later he embarked with a contingent from No 2 Commando as part of Force X heading for Gibraltar and Malta. His name is in the Submarine Patrol Log of HMS Unbeaten used in operations from Malta, along with that of 3654571 Corporal H. Slater, and he is also mentioned as part of this intelligence gathering force in a recorded interview with one of his NCO's at the time, Sgt Rudge DCM, held at the IWM. On their return he rejoined No 2 Commando at Ayr, and was appointed Captain of 5 troop.
